Morality in America
God Bless America
God Bless America

Are these words still a reality?

by Holly L. Meade

God Bless America, the American patriotic song written by Irving Berlin is a prayer for the Lord’s blessing and peace for the nation. Yet, can God really bless a nation that has drastically turned from His truth and righteousness since Berlin wrote those lyrics in 1918? Will God bless America when the White House is waging an assault on religious liberty, public schools are indoctrinating children with secularism, Hollywood is spewing toxins into homes and the Internal Revenue Service is launching investigations into pro-life organizations?

Considering its sinful state, this nation should be on its knees asking for His mercy instead, says Fox News conservative columnist Todd Starnes. Hence the reason that Starnes wrote his recent book, God Less America: Real Stories from the Front Lines of the Attack on Traditional Values.

Starnes authored this collection of satire and real life events because he believes the “Culture War” is not just directed at religious liberty, but the Christian faith. “I cover the Culture War for Fox News. For quite some time now and I‘ve been collecting all of these stories and without fail every time one of these stories comes out, people generally say how in the world can this be happening in the country? And some people say there is a vast conspiracy that they have people at the networks saying ‘oh you know, let‘s get the Christians!’ I don‘t think that‘s the case. I think it‘s just a matter of worldview,” Starnes said.

The Common Core debate heats up

by Diann Noles

For the past 20 years, America’s youth have fallen behind their counterparts in many European and Asian countries in technology and other skills that should prepare them to take leadership roles in the world arena. In recent rankings, America is anywhere from 17th to 20th out of 40 industrialized nations, a “mediocre” ranking. While everyone agrees that changes must be made to America’s primary and secondary education system, a consensus has been difficult to achieve, resulting in some strange alliances. Meanwhile, America’s leaders and educators have tried different tactics including No Child Left Behind and the current Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI).

Developed by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers, Common Core is a set of standards intended to raise the bar on education nationally. President Obama tied Common Core to his Race to the Top initiative, and awarded vouchers and grants to states that agreed to adopt the Common Core standards. Many see this connection as just the first step toward centralized, standardized education. “With the federal government pouring money into states to get them to adopt Common Core standards, there will be strings attached to develop a national education standard that replaces local values for one size fits all,” says Erick Erickson of RedState.com. The father of a second-grader, he is frustrated with the direction the education system is taking. “Once there is centralization, it makes it easier to politicize the standards,” he says.
Pray for President Obama & Administration

The Obama Administration is threatening to veto the House’s defense policy bill because it does not include several measures the Pentagon took to reduce defense spending and did not provide for moving prisoners in Guantanamo.

Vice President Joe Biden said the U.S. and its allies must impose additional sanctions on Russia if it interferes with Ukraine elections scheduled for Sunday – the first election since the country was plunged into chaos by separatists.
Pray for wisdom for President Obama and Vice President Biden as they deal with America’s security.
Congressional Prayer Needs

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (California) said she is “leaning toward appointing a full complement” of Democratic members to the Select Committee investigating the Benghazi attacks “to ensure fairness.”

Senate Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin (Illinois) vowed to keep fighting to give green cards to some illegal immigrants among the “Dreamers” who serve in the U.S. military.
Pray for the leaders of the House and Senate as they deal with domestic and foreign issues.
Judicial Prayer Focus

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case from a former air marshal who argued under whistleblower protection that he was fired for alerting reporters that armed, undercover marshals were being pulled from some flights.

A federal judge ruled only Congress has the authority to give budget autonomy to Washington, D.C., restricting the District from enforcing a local referendum passed last year.
Pray for the Supreme Court Justices as they draw close to the end of this session and have opinions still to write.
Pray for Current Events
THE WARS
Afghanistan is on financial life support and U.S. Joe Citizen is its permanent IV, suggests the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction who reported that between $5 and $10 billion annually is promised to them.

Al-Qaeda is operating a “shadow army” inside Afghanistan to conceal its numbers and the scope of its operations, while the Taliban is on the verge of major resurgence as U.S. military forces prepare to leave.
Pray about the Afghanistan that will be left behind when the U.S. military departs at the end of this year.
TERRORISM
Russian Prime Minister Medvedev warned that the United States and Russia are approaching a “second Cold War,” saying that President Obama and not President Putin is to blame for the deteriorating relation.

Pastor Saeed Abedini spent the last two months in an Iranian hospital for injuries allegedly suffered at the hands of prison guards, but has now been transferred back to one of the Islamic Republic’s most notorious prisons.
Pray about the deteriorating relationship between the U.S. and Russia, and for Pastor Abedini and his family.
THE ECONOMY
U.S. consumers’ interest in spending – not saving – is coming back with a vengeance as spending on consumer items has topped $10 million, surpassing pre-recession levels, and it is expected to increase 3.5 percent this year.

U.S. housing starts jumped in April and building permits hit their highest level in nearly six years, the Commerce Department said, offering hope that the troubled housing market may be finding stabilization.
Pray with thanksgiving for every indication that the U.S. economy is working its way back for many Americans.
ISRAEL AND THE MIDDLE EAST
The Palestinian leadership does not intend to seek membership in or help from additional UN and other international organizations in the near future, as they wait to see what diplomatic developments are ahead after talks collapsed.

A senior official in the White House reportedly said the U.S. would cooperate with a soon-to-be-formed Hamas-Fatah and PLO Palestinian unity government, despite Israeli opposition.
Pray that the new Palestinian unified government would see the benefit of recognizing Israel as a Jewish State.
HEALTH CARE
Researchers in Italy have found that a dog’s sense of smell may be more accurate than advanced laboratory procedures when it comes to detecting certain forms of cancer, experiencing a 98 percent success rate in detecting prostate cancer.

Minnesota is the first state to prohibit the use of a germ-killing ingredient found in many consumer-hygiene products such as soaps, deodorant and toothpaste because of health and environmental concerns about the product.
Pray for the physicians, laboratories and researchers who continue to explore ways to combat disease.

Appraising politicians’ fitness to serve

by Jim Ray

You will be glad to know that not just any old Joe can be installed in the control room of a nuclear power plant. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s “Personnel Access Authorization Requirements” mandates a comprehensive assessment of all individuals before they can be granted access to nuclear assets. Extensive psychological testing is required, as is careful scrutiny of any “medical condition that could adversely impact an individual’s fitness for duty or trustworthiness and reliability.”

As far as regulations go, it’s much easier to get into the White House. Theoretically at least, you can be certifiably crazy or deathbed-sick and still become president. Rather than establish restrictions for presidential candidates that would be controversial and perhaps unconstitutional, it is left to the voters and media to sift those who aspire to the position of Chief Executive. Whether this system works well is a matter of personal opinion, and the recent rumpus created by Karl Rove concerning the potential presidency of Hillary Clinton highlights the difficulty Americans have in deciding whether or not a candidate is fit to serve.

Rove, the Republican campaign strategist who orchestrated former President Bush’s 2000 campaign, ignited the controversy at a recent conference when he discussed Mrs. Clinton’s 2012 injury, which was reported as a concussion and a blood clot. “Thirty days in the hospital?” Rove asked. “And when she reappears, she’s wearing glasses that are only for people who have traumatic brain injury? We need to know what’s up with that.”

Results for the Survey on Education in America
We asked for your opinion in this week’s Tell It To Us Tuesday – and you responded! Thank you.

Here are the results. We’ll repeat the statement, and set out the percentages:

The federal government should set uniform standards in reading, math and science that must be met by every 12th grade graduate. Those who strongly disagreed were 44.9%; who somewhat disagreed 20.3%. For those who somewhat agreed, the percentage was 18.5%, and who strongly agreed, 11.3%. Only 5.1% were neutral or of no opinion.

Local school districts are best at setting standards and curricula for grades K-12. 57.1% strongly agreed, and 25.4% somewhat agreed. Those who somewhat disagreed were 7.3%, and who strongly disagreed, 4.6%. Neutral or no opinion – 5.6%.

Prayer for our Nation

Scripture Subversives

It was denounced by politicians and religious leaders as a dangerous instrument that would only spread “subversive” ideas. But after Johannes Gutenberg began printing Bibles on his newly invented press, there was no stopping it. “It was one of the great moments in the history of Western civilization,” wrote historian William Manchester, “and printers throughout Christendom flocked to kindle their torches from it.” Soon, presses all over Europe were churning out Bibles, and the Word of God was available to the masses for the first time.

Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Romans 5:2

“Access” is something we take for granted today. Even a trip to the library has been rendered superfluous by modern technology. But it hasn’t always been that way and, in truth, how few of your neighbors and your nation’s leaders have yet obtained the access that is gained “by faith” to God’s grace. Don’t assume that easy access in any way diminishes your responsibility to share the Gospel with others. They still need to hear, from you, about the love of Christ.

As you pray today, ask God to make you a light unto the world – a spiritual torch from which others will be ignited.

White House Heartbreak

You think modern presidential campaigns are rough? When Andrew Jackson ran for president almost 200 years ago, his opponents lowered the boom on him in ways that would shock even modern, Internet-numbed critics. Jackson was accused of being a murderer, an out-of-control gambler, and a traitor. They said his mother was a prostitute and his father a “mulatto” man. And his wife, Rachel, was labeled a bigamist. Becoming First Lady should have been a wonderful honor, but Rachel so hated Washington D.C. and all the rancor it produced that when Jackson was elected, a friend noted that her “energy subsided, her spirits drooped, and her health declined.” Rachel died of an apparent heart attack before her husband was inaugurated.

The hope of the righteous brings joy, but the expectation of the wicked will perish.
Proverbs 10:28

Why should you place your hope in the eternal? Because when your expectations are on earthly things, they will perish…someone will be along shortly to kick you in the teeth and steal your joy. Far better to build your foundation on Jesus Christ – only then can your work survive.

Today, ask for wisdom to be focused on righteous things, and may others in America see your example and seek Him.

Paper Towns

Had you walked the streets of any of America’s eastern cities during the second half of the nineteenth century, you would have soon been approached by a farmer or entrepreneur offering to sell you land in the west. A brochure would be presented containing a map illustrating an impressive new town complete with schools, stores, factories, churches and many fine homes. Literally thousands of Americans found this offer irresistible. Unfortunately, after leaving everything behind and making the journey west, buyers usually found the land they had purchased was real enough, but the “town” existed only on paper. They were in the middle of nowhere.

Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you.
Psalm 33:22

Doubters may say trusting in Christ and a future home in Heaven is a blind hope – like buying land sight unseen. But yours is a much more substantial hope than that. “For we did not follow cleverly devised myths,” writes Peter, “but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.” (II Peter 1:16) And God promises to make the truth known to all those who diligently seek him (Proverbs 8:17).

Today, pray that America’s leaders might turn away from myths…and to the truth of God and His Word.

Student rejected based on faith in God

by Carol Hatcher

When college student Brandon Jenkins was denied entry into the radiation therapy program at the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC), he asked a simple question to be prepared to reapply next term. Why? He wanted to know why the five-person panel rejected his application into the program. What he found has Christian jaws dropping all over the nation.

As a part of the application process, the panel interviewed Jenkins. The director of the program, Adrienne Dougherty, responded to Jenkins’ request for an explanation of rejection with, “I understand that religion is a major part of your life and that was evident in your recommendation letters, however, this field is not the place for religion.”

During the interview, Jenkins was asked, “What is most important in your life?” He answered simply and honestly with “ My God.”

As further explanation of CCBC’s decision, Dougherty said, “We have many patients who come to us for treatment from many different religions and some who believe in nothing at all. If you interview in the future, you may want to leave your thoughts and beliefs out of the interview process.”

A pair of recent news items related to immigration reform indicate just how conflicted Americans are over priorities in resolving the plight of the “strangers in our midst” (bearing in mind that your ancestors and mine were “strangers” at some point).

Napp Nazworth reports in The Christian Post that Speaker of the House John Boehner, who in February predicted that an immigration reform bill may be delayed beyond the current legislative session, last week joked at a press conference that his Republican colleagues in the House are afraid to take a stand on this touchy issue. “We get elected to make choices,” Boehner pointed out. “…it’s remarkable to me how many of my colleagues just don’t want to…they’ll take the path of least resistance.”

In contrast, Galen Carey, vice president of government relations for the National Association of Evangelicals, expressed optimism that the impact of this week’s Washington gathering of the Evangelical Immigration Table will bring pressure to bear on uncommitted members of Congress to get a reform bill passed after the mid-term elections in the fall and before the end of the year.

An Israeli and Palestinian take a different approach

by Holly L. Meade

When people hurt others, the common narrative is to fight back, take them to court, assert personal rights or run them off the road. Basically, seek revenge. Of course, that usually leads to more violence and hurt. Conversely, Mahatma Gandhi once said, “An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.” So is his way the answer to peace?

Bassam Aramin and Robi Damelin seem to think so.

Aramin is a Palestinian man whose 10-year-old daughter was killed by Israeli forces, and Damelin is an Israeli woman whose son was shot and killed by a Palestinian sniper. Recently, they publicly discussed their mutual love and support for each other at the Q Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. The annual three-day conference is a gathering of Christians who want to help renew their cities, industries and relationships for the future.

Pray about America’s continuing economic struggles, and for the millions who remain unemployed.
ISRAEL AND THE MIDDLE EAST

Military Suicides
Prayer 101

New reports confirm alarming health crisis

by By Bill Noles Jr.

There is a growing threat confronting America’s brave military men and women. On average, one suicide a day occurs in the military, and the number of service members who took their lives in 2012 surpassed the number killed in combat that same year.

Reaching a 30-year high in 2012, suicide rates among service members have become a significant public health crisis. The dramatic rise in suicide rates among active military personnel is the subject of the 2012 annual report released last month by the United States Department of Defense (DoD). The DoD Suicide Event Report (DoDSER) details the number of suicide attempts and deaths for U.S. service members.

“The department takes suicide prevention very seriously and considers any measure that saves a life as one worth taking,” said Lt. Gen. Michael S. Linnington, military deputy to the acting undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness. “The 2012 DoDSER gives us comprehensive information of suicide events and a greater understanding of the range of conditions associated with this very serious problem for the department.”

Mobile Showers For the Homeless
The Bright Spot

San Francisco, unofficially dubbed one of the homeless capitals of the U.S., counted nearly 6,500 homeless people last year, according to recent city numbers, with 4,300 people living on the street. Among the many problems the homeless face is little or no access to showers. San Francisco only has about 20 shower stalls to accommodate them.

But one woman has made it her mission to change that. She started Lava Mae, a sort-of showers on wheels – a project that aims to turn decommissioned city buses into shower stations for the homeless, and her launch is May 2014.
