Fire In The Foxhole

A battle for religious freedom in the military

by Gigi Cook

For many Americans the word “Foxhole” brings to mind an image of a camouflage clad, World War II era G.I. However, that stereotypical tie to the military of yesteryear is proving to be a significant stumbling block for some today. Now, a new kind of foxhole is being dug. This one is very close to the front-lines in a cultural war; specifically the war over religious freedom in the military.

Should the IRS monitor your pastor?

by Jim Ray

You would expect more than just 400 people to show up for a sermon by the Reverend Billy Graham, but when the famed evangelist preached at Moscow’s Church of the Resurrection on September 16, 1984, the crowd was remarkably small. It wasn’t because the Russian people lacked spiritual hunger. Rather, communist leaders of the officially-atheistic Soviet Union created an atmosphere of fear and confusion to suppress turnout.

Women in ministry under pressure

by Diann Noles

How balanced is your life? That’s the question 8,000 attendees at the 2013 Women of Faith Conference in Washington, D.C. were asked to consider.

Featured speakers at the conference focused their talks on balancing the pressures of a career (in their cases, ministry) and family, and the fear of failure to be “Superwoman.” With the conference theme of “Believe God Can Do Anything,” the presenters used personal experience to encourage and challenge the audience.

Pray For President Obama & Administration

President Barack Obama is still reviewing the options on how to respond to chemical weapons attacks in Syria, but an intelligence report on those attacks is slated to be released in the late part of this week, the White House said.

At least four major labor unions have joined in opposition to Attorney General Eric Holder’s antitrust lawsuit to block the $11 billion merger of American Airlines and US Airways the Justice Department says would hurt consumers.

Pray for President Obama, his Cabinet and advisers as they consider the U.S. response to chemical attacks in Syria.
Pray For Congressional Leaders

Representative Scott Rigell (Virginia) and 32 others have signed a letter citing Constitutional authority urging President Obama to call Congress back into session if he plans to use military force in Syria.

House Speaker John Boehner (Ohio) promised a “whale of a fight” over the debt ceiling and said he wanted cuts rather than an increase, a program that President Obama has flatly rejected.

Pray for all members of Congress as they return to Washington after Labor Day to face September’s hard issues.
Pray For Judicial Needs

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg faulted her colleagues for creating a judicial atmosphere of activism, and she suggested she’s going to “stick around” and try to turn back that tone, at least for another year.

A New Mexico event photographer’s refusal on religious grounds to photograph the commitment ceremony of a same-sex couple amounted to illegal discrimination, the state’s highest court ruled.

Pray about the issue of judicial activism scorned by both Justice Ginsburg and Justice Scalia recently.
Pray for Current Events
WARS AND TERRORISM
In the latest of brutal attacks against civilians this year, the Afghan Taliban executed 12 Afghan workers in two provinces after accusing them of working for the government. President Karzai condemned their actions.

Afghanistan is now in no rush to sign a pact with the United States setting out how many U.S. troops will remain after the NATO mission ends next year and may even delay their decision until next spring’s elections.

Pray for the safety of our Armed Forces as they operate in a declining effort in Afghanistan.
FOREIGN INTERESTS AND CONFLICTS
The countdown to possible Western military action in Syria gained momentum when Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said the U.S. military is “ready to go” if President Obama orders action in response to chemical attacks.

Two Islamist groups that broke away from Al Qaeda’s North Africa wing and fought in Mali have merged, pledging to attack French and other Western interests from the Nile westward across the continent.

Pray as U.S. warships and air power resources gather off the coast of Syria and in Cyprus.
THE ECONOMY
The share of young adults living with their parents edged up last year despite reported improvements in the economy – a sign that the effects of the recession continue to linger across America.

Four years into the economic recovery, U.S. workers’ pay still isn’t even keeping up with the low rate of inflation, and stagnant wages continue to erode spending power of consumers as prices creep upward.

Pray for America’s families and youth as unemployment remains high and the nation’s economy struggles.
ISRAEL AND THE MIDDLE EAST
Israel ordered a small-scale mobilization of reservists Wednesday and strengthened its missile defenses against possible Syrian attacks should Western powers carry out threatened strikes on Syria.

Since mid-August, 37 Egyptian Coptic Christian churches have been either destroyed or badly damaged and at least five others were attacked, leaving at least four dead. Many Christian homes and businesses have also been attacked.

Pray about unforeseen or unintended consequences in the region should the U.S. and the West attack Syria.
HEALTH CARE
The Obama Administration has delayed another step crucial to the launch of the new healthcare law, the signing of final agreements with insurance plans to be sold on federal health exchanges starting October 1.

Some 10,000 baby boomers will retire every day for the next 19 years, including many doctors, forecasting a wide numbers gap between those seeking healthcare under the new law and those able to provide it.

Pray about the issues that disrupt the timely implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
Presidential Quote of the Week
John F. Kennedy (1917-1963)

John F. Kennedy (1917-1963), 35th President of the United States

We observe today not a victory of party, but a celebration of freedom – symbolizing an end, as well as a beginning – signifying renewal, as well as change. For I have sworn before you and Almighty God the same solemn oath our forebears prescribed nearly a century and three quarters ago. The world is very different now. For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life. And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe – the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God.

Morality In America
An American Revival
An American Revival

It starts with you and me

by Holly L. Meade

“Have you noticed how much praying for revival has been going on of late - and how little revival has resulted? I believe the problem is that we have been trying to substitute praying for obeying, and it simply will not work.” – A.W. Tozer

Revival. The word may conjure up thoughts of tent meetings with a preacher shouting an evangelistic message and people flocking down the aisle in response. However, author Elmer Towns says, “You can‘t hold a revival. All you can do is participate in one that God is throwing. Revival crashes your Daytimer. . . interrupts TV times . . . demands your full attention . . and wears you out. Usually when we pray for revival, we’re telling God “sic ‘em” on the bad guys. Little do we realize that revival begins with us, the people of God.”

The White House has denounced Egypt’s latest round of political violence and announced its opposition to the State of Emergency law imposed by the ruling military. Yet spokesman, Josh Earnest, continuing the Administration’s long-standing policy, declined to weigh in on specific grievances at play in Egypt, and would not say whether the United States considers the overthrow of the country’s elected government constitutes a coup.

Obama administration joins appeal in upcoming Supreme Court case

by Dr. Tom Askew

The Obama administration is siding with those who favor allowing prayer at public meetings. Responding to a decision by the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals, the White House is supporting two separate friend-of-the-court briefs filed by various members of Congress. Those briefs urge the Supreme Court to rule in favor of uncensored prayers at local government meetings.

Pray For President Obama & Administration

President Obama will offer a series of proposals this week aimed at making college affordable by reshaping the way America pays for higher education to “create a better bargain for the middle class.”

The Hurricane Sandy federal task force led by HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan reports the East Coast should consider climate change when rebuilding as warmer waters and rising sea levels intensify storms.

Pray for President Obama and his Cabinet as they begin their push toward their fall agenda.
Pray For Congressional Leaders

Representative Marlin Stutzman (Indiana) and other supporters of an effort to defund Obamacare are banking on voter outrage during the Congressional recess to convince their leaders to adopt the strategy.

Senators Rob Wyden of Oregon and Mark Udall of Colorado say invasions of privacy by the National Security Agency are just the “tip of a larger iceberg” and have promised to bring more details forward.

Pray for the safety of our Congressional members as they travel at home and abroad during August.
Pray For Judicial Needs

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia says the Court is making decisions that should be left to Congress and the people, from wiretapping to “inventing” new classes of minorities and establishing special protections.

Military prosecutors cannot present most of the evidence they sought to show in what motivated the accused Fort Hood shooter, the judge ruled Monday. Major Hassan represents himself and is putting forth little defense.

Pray about the issue of judicial activism as courts rule when Congress fails to act.
Pray for Current Events
WARS AND TERRORISM
The commander of NATO coalition troops in eastern Afghanistan, Major General James McCornville, said he anticipates more insurgent attacks now than Ramadan has ended and the Taliban assets itself anew.

The U.S. has discovered nearly $1 trillion in untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan, far beyond previously known reserves, that are enough to fundamentally alter the Afghan economy and perhaps the Afghan war itself.

Pray for America’s military men and women serving in so many capacities in Afghanistan.
FOREIGN INTERESTS AND CONFLICTS
Syrian opposition accused President Assad’s forces of gassing many hundreds of people – one report says 1,300 – on Wednesday. If confirmed, it would be the world’s worst chemical attack in decades, and cross Obama’s “red line.”

Japan’s nuclear crisis escalated to the worst level since a massive earthquake and tsunami crippled the Fukishima more than two years ago, as storage tanks continue to leak highly-contaminated water with dangerous exposure levels.

Pray for the people of Syria who continue to flee into neighboring states to escape the civil war there.
THE ECONOMY
U.S. home sales rose in July to their highest level in over three years, suggesting a sharp increase in borrowing costs is having only a limited impact on the housing market’s recovery.

The nation’s labor market recovery was uneven last month with unemployment rates rising in 28 states and falling in eight, according to figures released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Pray about the country’s sluggish economic recovery and its impact on family budgets and plans.
ISRAEL AND THE MIDDLE EAST
The Palestinians would not have returned to the negotiating table with Israel but for an American letter of assurances, guaranteeing their main negotiating preconditions such as a return to the 1967 borders.

Israeli and Jewish targets all over the world are likely to be sought out by terrorist organizations in coming weeks according to the Israeli government’s Counter-Terrorism Bureau that listed dozens of countries with pending threats.

Pray for the peace of Israel as it sits in the midst of conflict all around.
HEALTH CARE
American workers and their employers saw another rise in health care insurance premiums this year as the total cost of employer-provided health benefits ticked up 4 percent for families and 5 percent for individuals.

In recent months, President Obama and his administration have waived or delayed half of Obamacare’ s legally imposed implementation deadlines according to the independent Congressional Research Service.

Pray about the coming uneven implementation of the Affordable Care Act on October 1.

Presidential Quote of the Week
Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969)

Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969), 34th President of the United States

At such a time in history, we who are free must proclaim anew our faith. This faith is the abiding creed of our fathers. It is our faith in the deathless dignity of man, governed by eternal moral and natural laws. This faith defines our full view of life. It establishes, beyond debate, those gifts of the Creator that are man’s inalienable rights, and that make all men equal in His sight. … This faith rules our whole way of life. It declares that we, the people, elect leaders not to rule but to serve. It asserts that we have the right to choice of our own work, and to the reward of our own toil. … The faith we hold belongs not to us alone but to the free of all the world

Firestorm of Debate

Author incites church discussion

by Bill Noles Jr.

Recently, an article written by Christian author and blogger Rachel Held Evans, “Why Millennials Are Leaving the Church,” went viral, creating a firestorm of debate among Christians.

In the article, published on CNN’s Belief Blog, Evans offered her take on why those belonging to the millennial generation are leaving the evangelical church in America and what should be done about it. Her opinions created the explosive debate that is still being discussed online in forums, posts, tweets and Facebook comments as well as offline in coffee shops and classrooms.
Pray For President Obama & Administration

Secretary of State John Kerry and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel met with their Russian counterparts in Washington for talks aimed at seeing what can be salvaged from the U.S.-Russia-Snowden relationship collapse.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samatha Power used her first public speech to urge young activists to demand results and criticized the UN and red-tape bureaucracies that don’t always prioritize progress.

Pray for President Obama, his Cabinet and diplomats as they deal with important international relationships.
Pray For Congressional Leaders

Senator Ed Markey (Massachusetts) wrote President Obama saying exports of natural gas should be restricted so that the U.S. isn’t put in the position of needing to import it from countries under terrorist control or influence.

If Congress doesn’t pass a comprehensive immigration reform law in the next year, then President Obama might be “tempted” to legalize 11 million undocumented immigrants by executive order, warned Senator Marco Rubio.

Pray for members of Congress on recess whether vacationing, campaigning or traveling internationally.
Pray For Judicial Needs

In a stinging rebuke to the Bloomberg administration, a federal judge ruled that the New York City Police’s “stop-and-frisk” crime fighting practice violates the Constitutional rights of minorities notwithstanding reduced crime rates.

West Virginia’s Attorney General – along with 22 other states – asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a federal appeals court ruling that declared a New York town’s practice of starting a meeting with prayer unconstitutional.

Pray about the rulings of the courts and their impact on civil society in America.
Pray for Current Events
WARS AND TERRORISM
The Shi’ite-led Iraqi government and Kurdish authorities are concluding that recent attacks in Kurdistan and Baghdad have one familiar fingerprint – Al Qaeda – whose insurgents are rapidly gaining ground a year after U.S. pullout.

The top U.S. and coalition commander in Afghanistan stressed the signing of a stalled national security agreement between America and Afghanistan was needed to signal Taliban and Afghan people of international commitment.

Pray about the increasing roles of Al Qaeda in terrorist activities through the Middle East and North Africa.
FOREIGN INTERESTS AND CONFLICTS
Egypt has imposed a month-long state of emergency because of violence between security forces and several pro-Morsi camps, bringing death, injury and chaos to the streets of Cairo and other Egyptian communities.

Medical aid agency Doctors Without Borders closed all its operations in war-torn Somalia after 22 years, warning of increased insecurity. So far this year, the agency has treated over 300,000 people in Somalia.

Pray about both the real and hidden costs of worldwide political instability, particularly in human tolls.
THE ECONOMY
President Obama wants to pay for high-speed internet and wi-fi service to America’s schools by raising fees on mobile-phone users, relying on the Federal Communications Commission to impose the fees, bypassing Congress.

The United States government spent $98 billion more than the revenue it took in during July, with the deficit driven by spending on healthcare programs, pensions for the elderly, and the military.

Pray as the United States still rides a bumpy road to economic recovery, and about new fees and taxes.
ISRAEL AND THE MIDDLE EAST
The Israeli military shot down a rocket launched toward the Red Sea resort of Eilat, near the border with Egypt. An Al Qaeda-inspired militant group based in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula claimed responsibility for the rocket attack.

The U.S. State Department criticized Israel for approving new settlements on disputed lands even as long-stalled peace talks have resumed. The State Department urged Prime Minister Netanyahu to put the 1200-home project on hold.

Pray about the peace negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians and the centuries of ill-will to overcome.
HEALTH CARE
The California Supreme Court ruled that school staff without healthcare licenses can administer insulin and other prescription drugs to students. The case had the potential to serve as a national precedent.

Only 25 percent of state-employed home-health workers found guilty of abusing disabled and mentally ill patients are terminated from their positions. The majority found protection by their unions and faced loss of vacation time.

Pray for the members of society who are unable to care for themselves due to youth, age, or infirmity.

Priest or Angel at Accident Scene?
The Bright Spot

Someone was there and then just disappeared
Emergency workers and community members in eastern Missouri are not sure what to make of a mystery priest who showed up at a critical accident scene Sunday morning and whose prayer seemed to change life-threatening events for the positive.

Even odder, the black-garbed priest does not appear in any of the nearly 70 photos of the scene of the accident in which a 19-year-old girl almost died. No one knows the priest and he vanished without a word, said Raymond Reed, fire chief of New London, Missouri.

"I think it‘s a miracle," Reed said. "I would say whether it was an angel that was sent to us in the form of a priest or a priest that became our angel, I don‘t know. Either way, I‘m good with it."

The decision was both lauded and criticized by city officials and others.

New questions arise over terrorist attack

by Dave Ficere

The saying “It‘s not the crime, it‘s the cover-up” is said to have originated with the Watergate scandal that brought down Richard Nixon’s presidency in August, 1974. But, many of you who grew up in earlier generations would beg to differ. Your parents probably said something similar after catching you in a misdeed. The refrain went something like this: “If you misbehave you’ll be punished, but if you lie to me about it, the punishment will be far worse.”

What was true for Richard Nixon, me and perhaps you, may sadly also become a reality for President Obama as the Benghazi scandal threatens to become his legacy.

Nearly one year after the deadly attack on the U.S. embassy compound that killed four Americans, including U.S. ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens, there are more questions than answers about the incident. After ridiculously blaming what it called a “spontaneous demonstration” on a YouTube video, the administration was forced to admit the incident was not only a pre-planned and well-orchestrated terrorist attack, but had nothing to do with the obscure video that had been floating around in cyberspace for several months.

Is the United Nations after your guns

by Jim Ray

George Orwell wrote about politicians who abuse words in “a consciously dishonest” way. “The person who uses them has his own private definition,” he said, “but allows the hearer to think he means something quite different.” Orwell wrote this in a famous 1946 essay entitled “Politics and the English Language,” and, if he were around today, he would not likely find comfort in the way things have progressed over the intervening years.

Some Americans today are worried about the meaning of the verbiage in the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty, which President Obama plans to sign. The White House says the treaty is harmless to U.S. gun owners, but many Second Amendment supporters say it is a Constitution-destroying maneuver that would ultimately allow the United Nations to control your guns. Should you be alarmed?
Presidential Quote of the Week
Harry S. Truman (1884-1972)

Harry S. Truman (1884-1972), 33rd President of the United States

The peoples of the earth face the future with grave uncertainty, composed almost equally of great hopes and great fears. In this time of doubt, they look to the United States as never before for good will, strength, and wise leadership. It is fitting, therefore, that we take this occasion to proclaim to the world the essential principles of the faith by which we live, and to declare our aims to all people. The American people stand firm in the faith which has inspired this Nation from the beginning. We believe that all men have a right to equal justice under law and equal opportunity to share in the common good. We believe that all men have the right to freedom of thought and expression. We believe all men are created equal because they are created in the image of God. From this faith we will not be moved.
